I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is a fantastic, exciting, well written story. It has strong characters that are easily related to. The Native American Folklore and supernatural suspense added intriguing elements and kept me reading through to the end. I could not put it down and read it in 1 day! I look forward to reading more from Watkins. Truly exceptional! You will not be disappointed!!When the evil deeds of those who came before pass into legends. Have you ever read a book that was so bad it actually made you angry each and every moment you read it? I can't explain why I felt compelled to finish this book and I wish I could take back that time and do something more enjoyable like flossing or clipping my toenails. My faith in Goodreads has declined significantly if this is the 26th best Gothic novel of all time. Seriously??? The WORST book I have read this year.
I purchased this book because its unique setting intrigued me. Mateguas tells the story of the Andersen family who inherit a home on a small island off the coast of Maine. The interesting thing about this island is that it is not connected to the mainland by a bridge or causeway - you can only get to and from there by ferry, a fact that Karen Andersen, the wife, is not at all happy with. She's used to the big city - malls, shopping, dining out, etc. and there's none of that on this island. She
