Here is the stunning international bestseller in the tradition of Watership Down but with a dark, original twist. Unique, daring, and unforgettable, it tells the story of an ordinary family who accidentally threaten the security of a hidden civilization as intelligent as our own--a colony of ants determined to survive at any cost....

Jonathan Wells and his young family have come to the Paris flat at 3, rue des Sybarites through the bequest of his eccentric late uncle Edmond. Inheriting the dusty apartment, the Wells family are left with only one warning: Never go down into the cellar.

But when the family dog disappears down the basement steps, Jonathan follows--and soon his wife, his son, and various would-be rescuers vanish into its mysterious depths.

Meanwhile, in a pine stump in a nearby park, a vast civilization is in turmoil. Here a young female from the russet ant nation of Bel-o-kan learns that a strange new weapon has been killing off her comrades. To find out why, she enlists the help of a warrior ant, and the two set off on separate journeys into a harsh and violent world. It is a world where death takes many forms--savage birds and voracious lizards, warlike dwarf ants and rapacious termites, poisonous beetles and, most bizarre of all, the swift, murderous, giant guardians of the edge of the world: cars.

Yet the end of the female's desperate quest will be the eerie secret in the cellar at 3, rue des Sybarites--a mystery she must solve in order to fulfill her special destiny as the new queen of her own great empire. But to do so she must first make unthinkable communion with the most barbaric creatures of all.

Empire of the Ants is a brilliant evocation of a hidden civilization as complex as our own and far more ancient. It is a fascinating realm where boats are built of leaves and greenflies are domesticated and milked like cows, where citizens lock antennae in "absolute communication" and fight wars with precisely coordinated armies using sprays of glue and acids that can dissolve a snail. Not since Watership Down has a novel so vividly captured the lives and struggles of a fellow species and the valuable lessons they have to teach us.

Article Based On Books Empire of the Ants (La Saga des Fourmis #1)
I found this book on my father's bookshelves when I was 7 years old(which was the time that I loved reading some short stories,) and read the first page of it. I couldn't control my body; I couldn't stop my hands from flipping the pages; I couldn't stop my brain to stop reading this book. The only thing I can say about this book is.... nothing. It cannot close my wide-opened mouth. It is very astonishing. And about the author, too. Bernard Werber always loved ants, and he always tried to find out

Here is a case of two distinct stories foolishlyand needlesslybound together. The one that deals with ants is truly eye-opening. At first I suspected Mr. Werber (a Frenchie) of severely embellishing some of the attributes given to the ant species discussed: their incessant warfare with each other, their proclivity for farming, and their ability to engage in sophisticated communication, dare I say language. It turns out the author was only slightly exaggerating. The other story, the one with

So, you bitches thought you were superior to ants? This book will prove you WRONG like hell!Seriously, I read this a long time ago, and it still keeps a permanent mark in my brain as one of the best sci-fi/insectological books I've ever read. It's about ants, yes. I won't spoil your read, it's all about ants, from time to time we will get a glimpse of real human characters who are oblivious f the ants' plans to conquer the world, while human scientists have found a way to communicate with ants and

Far out, another excellent story written by a scientist who can not write "people"! (I'm looking at you, "Cobra Event")Half of this story is told from the EXCELLENT perspective of ants, really really deep characters and their universe is so well formed. Would have been a solid 4 or 5 stars. But then there's a human story sort of shoved in among the Ant Tales, which is just dreadful, the plot from a Penny Dreadful. Bernard then tries to tie them in together.WHY was there no editor to tell him

A magnificent and fascinating story about another civilization on Earth - ants. An ingenious story with elements of science fiction, an easy detective and a philosopher's essay. The book is very interesting and fascinating, it is read in one breath. After reading you will learn many interesting facts about ants and their civilization, for their 100 million years of evolution, they have achieved much and in many respects are similar to people and even ahead of them. Very interesting the author

Ants are very scary. To think that they can kill a bird who pecks at their nest or a lizard who lives nearby using their very strong jaws and chemical weaponry made from formic acid is scary enough. To think that they can take over the world is worse. But really, could an insect with a brain that contains only a few neurons (250,000 approximately divided into three brain areas) be able to have the inventiveness and memory and creativity of the ant characters in this book? Could the empire of the

There are millions of ants. And we do not know what they are about to do next.A dangerous experiment from a wired sientist leads to a lot of dead people. It is an end time thriller with a special view of the world. From down under our feet.
