As a huge fan of the show, I decided I wanted to read the Walking Dead comics and this was actually my first real encounter with comic books. These comics are absolutely awesome!! This compendium covers issues 1-48, which is also equivalent to the first 8 regular Trade Paperbacks of the comic book series.I knew that the show had deviated from the comics in a number of ways, but there were FAR more differences than I anticipated. Truly amazing. It is a far grittier concept than the show (for obvious reasons) and it makes for interesting reading as the overarching similarity is there but there are many differences. Characters who are dead in the show are still around and vice versa. Overall the black and white art is quite appropriate to the series and well done. The dialogue as well. It is far darker than what tv shows and is certainly more graphic. If you like zombies or the show I would highly recommend this series.

My actual rating is 4.5 stars.It's unfair to compare the comics to the TV series. The two are very different from each other and I am coming into it from the wrong side, having watched and fallen in love with the show first and then discovering the comics. I knew it was different than the TV show but HOLY COW. It's so different. They are basically just something that has a few same character names and there happens to be zombies. That's about all the similarities. They are more like cousins instead of siblings. (Hopefully that make's sense to you, it did to my brain.) I liked this so much more than I actually thought I would.
