ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature.I read The Farseer Saga years ago and have since considered it one of my favorite fantasy epics. It's one (along with The Lord of the Rings and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn) that I often suggest to new fantasy readers. But after more than a decade of reading deeper and further into fantasy literature, I've often wondered how well this saga would now appeal to my more mature (I hope) palate. When Tantor Audio recently released The Farseer Saga on audio, I wasMy first attempt at Robin Hobb sent me back to those good old days of reading escapist fantasy without doing much else in my life. Go back, get away from the grimdark bloodletting of other royal houses and see what the Farseers are up to. Very enjoyable.
assassin's apprentice - 5royal assassin - 4,5 only because most of the deaths and disasters would not have happened if they had killed Regal in the very beginning
Loved it. I'm amazed at the difference between this series, and the Rainwilds series. Fitz is a character that you feel empathy for, that you sit there and wonder how he is going to solve his problems, and that you can't wait to get back to when you're interrupted. I'm very happy that I received an ARC
For what it is, this is a good book. It has some interesting characters and ideas. I began to be annoyed about 100 pages into the second book in the series. I realized that the story was not being told naturally but was being drawn out, like a soap opera. It was a similar experience to eating fast food -- good-tasting but lacking the substance of real food. It was darn good fast food, but junk food nonetheless.
It was a very enjoyable book, and I think my favorite thing about it was reading a well-written book in from the first-person perspective. I think Robin Hobb was masterful in that aspect of the writing. It adds a fun dynamic to a story when you can get completely get inside the head of a character. One impressive thing that was done with the first person view was how little we know... because the character doesn't know them. For example: There's all sorts of court intrigue and secret plots going
