This is the story of a young whale and his unfiltered, simple view of life in the ocean, told in brutal honestly and without sentimentality. It hurts but it is also beautiful. The Danish cartoon Samson & Sally, which traumatized every 80s kid, is based on this story, and I love both of them dearly. Bent Haller is one of those children’s book writers who does not treat kids as emotionally incompetent or stupid, and that’s probably why he speaks to me, even as an adult.
