Write-Up Out Of Books Las batallas en el desierto
I'd like to imagine this was really hip and transgressive forty years ago, but the illusion as of right now doesn't quite do it for me.

A tale of a middle class family in Mexico City as seen through the eyes of the youngest kid, there's mystery, romance, and self discovery.

For years my buddy Pablo has been telling me that I need to read this book. Indeed, for anyone under 40 who lives in the hip Roma-Condesa part of Mexico City (and especially for foreigners), Pacheco's slim novella should be mandatory reading. Sadly, it was José Emilio Pacheco's death a couple weeks ago that finally convinced me to give it a read. Set in 1948, though published in 1981, the plot follows a typical literary trope: young, precocious kid falls in love with his friend's mom and is then

A short book that captures you in a period in time, where Mexico was more at peace, the problems were not easier, but success was more at grasp. The descriptions made me enter this bubble that now a days you can only feel in American movies where they always put a yellow filter on the camera lens when talking about "Mexico". I loved it!

This was for a class, but I liked it.

So detailed description of Mexico in Miguel Aleman times. First love story, teenager story love. Excellent!
