Representaion Conducive To Books Prince of Foxes

Prince of Foxes is a rare book that succeeds both in creating a dramatic story with compelling characters as well as perfectly capturing the tone of the age.

The author's background as a historian shines through his work, and his love of Renaissance Italy is palpable. More interesting to me was how it contrasted with his treatment of more medieval thoughts and practices that Italy was leaving behind- so evenhanded and oblique is Shellabarger's approach that at final analysis he does not seem a clear partisan for one or the other.

The language in Prince of Foxes is rich and beautiful, and several times I paused to softly re-read aloud passages that were so evocative and poetic as to command my appreciation. The writing is reminiscent of Alexander Dumas, but the adventure concerns itself with less swashbuckling and more intrigue and delicate matters of state.

The book is divided into several overarching sections, each with a distinct tone. The first volume of Prince of Foxes had a quite separate personality from what would follow later, changes manifested not just by character growth but a different look at the world the characters live in that encourages the reader to continuously re-analyze the setting and actors within it.

At final analysis, the setting is the gem of Prince of Foxes. Historical personages appear and act true to the legacy we have of them, and mold so seamlessly that a casual reader may be forgiven for not knowing which characters are entirely of the author's imagination and which truly lived and breathed. This was a wonderful book I would strongly recommend.

Assess Of Books Prince of Foxes

One of the best books I have ever read! Written by the Author of "Captain From Castille" and set in Italy in 1500. A swashbuckling adventure filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing. The main character, Andrea Orsini, is a brilliant man, whom I grew to love as he transformed throughout the novel. It wasn't a book I was able to read in a day or two. It was wonderfully long - so that you really feel a sense of the people's lives. I was sad when it ended.

My second time reading! As with the first reading I loved it. My 78-year-old friend said, "Oh that was my mother's favorite book!" It was my mother's favorite also... Indeed, it has passed down through the ages. Delightful! I'm sure I will read another winter when I want a good book ...

This is an amazing book! Definitely one of my all-time favourites, and there wasn't even any magic in it (!). So this is a historical fiction that follows the charming Andrea Orsini in 16th century Italy during the time of Cesare Borgias. After reading and enjoying Lord Vanity, I was really looking forward to trying Prince of Foxes. I ended up loving the way Shellabarger creates the detailed historical setting of Italy in the year 1500, and he has written some unique and interesting characters in this story too. Andrea Orsini, our initially mercenary hero, is much more dimensional than I expected. An enjoyable read, while providing a lot of "information" about Borgia-sean Italy.I found this book on my niece's book-shelf. I don't know why I started reading it but it was probably because I read Mario Puzo's dreadful pornographic version of the Borgias (and sometimes I still struggle to forget that read it) and as I scanned the intro I thought this might prove to be an antidote.The book was originally published in 1947 and I was reading a new edition in 2002.
