Welcome to Goblin, a very average small American town where nothing much happens. Forget that, this is a Josh Malerman production, so expect the unexpected where anything can and will happen. Malerman is in the early stages of a stellar career, but from what he has published already its blindingly obvious he can turn his hand to anything, and thats why he is just so exciting. A new Malerman is fast becoming a calendar event for me and Im already hungry for the next novel Burying Susan which isFrom one of horror's new voices, GOBLIN is an excellent and unique stories set in the same fictional city. Mr. Malerman's writing flows beautifully, and he blends love and horror and hope in equal measures. Each story thrills and chills. Highly recommended.
4.5/5 stars. I loved Bird Box, and therefore eagerly read Goblin. Its hard for me to say which one I actually enjoyed more, but Goblin is definitely the better written of the two. It doesnt suffer from short, stunted sentences, nor does it have an ending that doesnt live up to the rest of the book. Like Bird Box, Goblin is a tense thrill ride that kept me quickly turning the pages. Unlike Bird Box, the several short stories in Goblin introduce readers to a diverse list of characters and
Pretty weird. I'm not sure I liked the short story format and I don't know if they told one story combined. Some of the stories were just plain weird and seemed to spiral out of my minds ability to understand what it was that was going on and what the author intended me to walk away with. There was so much creepiness that was never addressed and left instead very vague. Was this book scary? No. Was this book weird. Definitely. Weird good? Not sure.
"He hadn't been thinking directly of ghosts but ghosts always hid in the one place with corners he could not remove. His mind." I feel this is more of a novel than just short stories. And every one is a gem. No spoilers here. I only hope some other larger publisher does an edition so more people can get their hands on it!
Malerman lives up to his reputation as a writer to watch with GOBLIN, a stunning novel of interconnected novellas that pays homage to Oxrun Station and Charles L. Grant's THE ORCHARD. These six novellas explore the rainy town of Goblin, exploring it's dark history, it's haunted present and expertly weaves the psychological with the supernatural. Malerman beguiles us with the stories of some of this town's residents, and leaves the reader wanting more...particularly the secrets of Goblin's
Josh Malerman burst onto the horror scene with Bird Box, a book that was getting some strong buzz long before the Netflix movie raised its profile, and after I read A House at the Bottom of a Lake, I knew I was going to be a big fan. I was able to track down most of his books, but Goblin, a small-press limited run, proved to be elusive. When I realized I was less interested in owning it than I was in reading it, I borrowed it through my local library's interlibrary loan process. I went into the
